Chapter 1881 – 1881. Eternal Eden

By the time we reached the fifth floor, it was clear the security team was exhausted. Considering they’d taken down six or seven monster spiders on each floor, they’d killed over twenty of them just getting to the fifth.

It wasn’t exactly a great feat. In my eyes, these monster spiders were still immature. And yet, they were panting after only twenty? I knew that stamina dropped rapidly in combat, but weren’t these guys supposed to be professionals, part of the security team?

‘Plus, six of them got injured.’

None of the injuries were life-threatening. I decided to fire those six from the security team. They should be grateful they weren’t being expelled from Sungak Elementary.

“The injured will be given first aid and then transported,” Park Hae-gil said. His right hand was crippled, and he’d been subtly ignored by the security team, but now he was exuding charisma in the field. I just watched from behind.

Gu Tae-hee came up beside me and put a cigarette in her mouth.

“Do you smoke?”

“No. Women hate the smell of smoke.”

“Well, I happen to like it.”

“That’s not even a cigarette.”

It looked like a cigarette, but it wasn’t. I could tell by the smell. It was a joint made of marijuana. She smelled like burning dry grass.

“I’m addicted to marijuana. I can’t live without it.”

Maybe it was the marijuana, but Gu Tae-hee’s body seemed a little looser. Still, her eyes were as sharp as ever.

“That man, was his name Park Hae-gil?”

“Yeah. He used to be the CEO of PS Security. He’s ex-special forces, but I don’t know which unit. Don’t really care.”

“He’s useful. Guys like him aren’t common, especially not in this world.”

“I guess.”

Park Hae-gil was useful? He might seem that way now.

“It seems you disagree. Can I hear your reasons?”

“We can have different opinions.”

“I’m pretty confident in my judgment of people, but I do make mistakes sometimes. A man like you wouldn’t underestimate him just because you don’t like him. You must have evaluated him based on criteria and information I missed. Your opinion would be helpful to me. If you really don’t want to, it’s fine.”

“It’s not hard to talk about it. Do you know why his right hand is messed up? Because of his meddling. He ignored my orders and tried to save someone, and that’s what happened.”

“…I see. That’s a bit difficult.”

“And what does it matter if he’s good at commanding here? I’d bet my hand he can’t handle a single variant properly. What’s important in this era isn’t leadership. It’s power.”

“Power…”

“If, say, I fought you and a hundred of your subordinates, who do you think would win? You guys would be in body armor, armed with assault rifles, and on favorable terrain.”

“……”

Gu Tae-hee frowned and took a long drag of her joint. In her mind, a battle between me and her was playing out.

Then, she said with a serious expression, “This is a problem. I can’t think of a way to win in a head-on fight. I don’t think even a tank could win.”

“Head-on, huh? What about assassination? Is that a possibility?”

“Of course. You’re still human, so you’ll be careless. You have to eat, you have to relieve yourself, you’ll do pointless things for entertainment. Unless you’re a machine, humans are bound to be careless at some point. Like this.”

Gu Tae-hee held a small knife in her left hand and aimed it at my neck. It was shorter than a finger, but long enough to kill a human.

I was surprised. I hadn’t reacted because I hadn’t felt any killing intent. When she moved her hand, I’d thought she was just reaching for her joint. As she said, I’d been careless.

“Even if you have monstrous strength, there are plenty of ways to kill a human.”

“Impressive. But that’s too obvious.”

“…Obvious?”

I grabbed Gu Tae-hee’s hand holding the knife. Not to push it away, but to pull it closer. The small blade cut into my skin. It didn’t stop there; the blade dug deeper, severing arteries and veins.

The pain and foreign sensation in my neck. The feeling of blood draining away. It was a terrible feeling. But it wasn’t unbearable.

In front of me, Gu Tae-hee was covered in blood, looking shocked.

‘Even a seasoned gangster boss is surprised with that expression.’

I released her hand. She quickly pulled the small knife out.

“What the hell? Are you crazy?!”

“Look closely. I’m not dead.”

It was hard to speak. My vocal cords must have been damaged. I focused my mind on the painful wound. Gu Tae-hee’s mouth fell open. Her one eye was wide. In her trembling pupil, she could see the wound healing rapidly.

In less than thirty seconds, the wound was completely gone. Only the bright red blood proved it had ever been there.

“Do you think you can kill me by crushing my heart or cutting off my head? You called me a monster. Why do you think a monster is a monster? Because common sense doesn’t apply. From now on, don’t think too logically.”

“I don’t think there are many humans like you…”

“Even if there aren’t many, there will be some. This world is full of idiots and lunatics.”

“Is this a warning?”

“Well, yeah. If you try to get along too well, there are always guys who try to stab you in the back. When that happens, I just show them a little of my power.”

Then they’ll know their place.

The reason Tae-wang is cooperating with me right now is because he thinks I’m dangerous. Rather than making me an enemy, it’s more beneficial to keep me as an ally, even if it means taking a small loss. That’s what my experience has taught me.

‘If you try to take too much… you’ll end up like that vampire detective.’

He kept exploiting everyone, and the whole world turned against him, even the South Korean government. Of course, the world was destroyed as a result of that global rebellion.

‘If I want to keep exploiting them for a long time, I need to tone down my temper.’

I wiped the blood off my neck.

“I heard that Awakened Ones grow stronger as they use their abilities. Are you hurting yourself on purpose?”

“I do it sometimes. Dr. Na doesn’t seem to like it much, but it’s the right way to grow my abilities.”

I also learned that focusing my mind on the wound helped it heal faster.

“…Why do you go that far? You’re already strong enough without doing such crazy things.”

“I can’t let myself get beaten by weaklings. Earlier, those weaklings started a riot. The moment they think I’m weak, they’ll try to take what’s mine. Training is annoying, and I hate pain, but I hate having my things taken away even more.”

“…I think I understand what kind of person you are now.”

Gu Tae-hee quickly regained her composure and took out a new marijuana joint. I leaned against the window. Recovering my neck had taken a lot of stamina. But if I stayed still, my stamina would recover thanks to my regeneration. Regeneration was a very useful ability.

About three minutes later, Gu Tae-hee dusted off her hands.

“That’s enough of a break. Let’s move.”

We headed to the sixth floor.

There were no gunshots on the sixth floor. There wasn’t a single monster spider. We searched every corner, but they were nowhere to be found.

“It’s certain that the spiders were here until just now. There are traces,” Park Hae-gil said. His face was serious.

“There’s only one reason why the spiders suddenly moved. The queen spider must have called them. It’s an all-out war.”

Gu Tae-hee clicked her tongue. Even if we were armed, an all-out war would be a different story. Monster spiders were fundamentally stronger than humans. If they used some of their numbers as meat shields and charged, it would be hard to handle.

“We need to prepare thoroughly.”

The seventh and eighth floors were also empty. The ninth floor looked like a breeding ground. There were eggs. Some of them had baby spiders in them. Even the baby spiders were the size of a human head.

“If we leave them alive, they’ll cause trouble. Don’t show them mercy just because they’re babies. Kill them all,” Gu Tae-hee ordered her subordinates. They swung their maces, smashing the baby spiders and eggs.

Watching the scene, I turned on my radio.

“Dr. Na, are you watching?”

-…I can’t watch everything. I’m busy with the aftermath here. There are so many people who participated in the rebellion that we don’t have enough cells. We even have to make restraints separately.

“Leave that minor stuff to the underlings. Do you need those baby spiders? For research purposes.”

-There might be something we can get from the byproducts of the monster spiders. But I don’t think it’ll be that helpful. I’m a technologist, not a bionics expert. Unless it’s a special material like the heat-resistant spider silk from the queen spider you mentioned earlier, it’s more beneficial to focus on technology research.

“Technology research is slow.”

-That’s because I’m doing it alone. It would be great if there were more researchers, but you know how hard it is to find reliable research personnel.

“Yeah. I can’t help that. Even if I forcibly bring them in and make them work, they won’t do it properly if it’s not just simple labor.”

I agreed with her and got to the point.

“Four combat drones. Can you support us? You’ve subdued all those idiots, right?”

-…You want me to send combat drones all the way over there?

“They’ll get here quickly. We’ve improved the batteries, so they’re good enough. We’re about to have a full-scale battle. The spiders are clearly planning an all-out war. We can’t let them control us.”

-I’ve sent them. They’ll arrive in three… no, two minutes. If the drones are destroyed, be sure to collect the remains. It’s several times more efficient to repair and reuse them than to make new ones.

“Thanks.”

Two minutes.

We waited a bit and then went up the stairs to the tenth floor.

It was quiet. That made us even more tense.

‘Should I take Bister II now? The combat drones might be able to do something. The suicide drones didn’t work, but combat drones are different….’

-They’ve arrived near the building. The queen spider is looking at them. What should we do? Attack now?

“Wait.”

It would be more effective for the combat drones to show off their firepower if they drew the queen spider’s aggro. I took the lead and kicked open the door to the tenth-floor office.
