Chapter 60 – Episode 9-1
Junwoo got off at the terminal and caught a taxi. The school was located over a 30-minute drive from downtown.
It was around evening when we arrived in front of the school. A vast campus with a tall mountain at its back. The winter break wasn’t over yet, so there were hardly any students to be seen.
Only the words ‘Hyobal University’ written on the largest building were shining alone. Now it suddenly occurred to me that the name of the school was very strange.
I headed to my room, which was about a 5-minute walk from the front door. Thinking of it as a simulation of my first trip home, I checked the nearby amenities.
The neighborhood located at the foot of the mountain was quiet. There were several restaurants, bars, and convenience stores scattered along the roadside.
A four-story one-room building with two houses on each floor. Among them, Junwoo’s room was room 302 on the 3rd floor.
I stood in front of the building and called the number given to me by the real estate agent. Although it was late, the landlord welcomed Junwoo warmly.
“It was hard to come this far. I cleaned it briefly, but I’m not sure how it will turn out. “It’s well-decorated, so it’s convenient for students.”
“Yes, thank you.”
The landlord was a friendly-looking woman with chubby cheeks. She looked a little older than Mi-jeong and So-hee.
The landlady told me a few things, including the password for the entrance and where to dispose of the trash, and she went up to the 4th floor where she was staying.
Thanks to Mijeong calling her landlord in advance to pay her balance and finalizing her contract, Junwoo was able to go straight to her room and unpack her luggage.
I put down my bag and sat down on the bed. A small studio with a bed, desk, and TV. There was a refrigerator and sink in one corner, and the school looked up through the large window next to the bed.
Living alone for the first time in my life. As she sat in her own quiet space, she felt strange.
She called Mijeong and told her that she had arrived safely. After hanging up and fiddling with his cell phone, Junwoo searched for one of his phone numbers on the Internet. It was Sunshine Dairy Customer Center.
“Hello, this is Sunshine Dairy, which always brings happiness.”
“I would like to request delivery.”
Junwoo gave the address and selected some yogurt. These were the products that Sohee first visited last spring to promote a new product and gave them as samples.
Of course, there was no way Sohee would deliver, but I had a strange thought that I would have to eat this yogurt to stay connected to Sohee.
He took a shower and went to sleep. I couldn’t sleep because my new bed was unfamiliar, but I just wanted to get away from this dark night.
Junwoo, who had spent the night with open eyes, woke up early in the morning and leaned against the window.
As I looked out in front of my house, I saw a Sunshine Dairy yogurt delivery truck approaching from afar. The delivery person was an ordinary woman that you commonly see.
After the delivery man left, she opened the front door and found yogurt inside her new delivery bag. Junwoo grabbed a yogurt and hung by the window again.
I looked around to see if there was a man in a scary suit watching somewhere, but there seemed to be no one watching, perhaps because I didn’t see him or not.
Is it because I had a hard time sleeping at night and was too focused? Junwoo fell asleep half-covered in bed and woke up only around lunchtime.
I put the yogurt I had put in the refrigerator in my bag and went out. She walked slowly and looked around her neighborhood. I felt it when I was looking at houses, but as expected, it was a quiet neighborhood. Beneath the towering mountains and large campus, there were hardly any buildings higher than the fifth floor.
While I was hungry, I found a shabby restaurant. When I opened the old sliding door with aluminum sash, I saw tables that looked like they were over 30 years old crowded together under a dim fluorescent light. There was not a single customer.
“Oh my, welcome~”
A fat woman with permed hair was sitting in her chair watching TV and woke up in shock. As if it was a surprise that a guest came.
Junwoo sat in a corner and looked at the menu. Kimchi stew, soybean paste stew, stir-fried pork. They were ordinary Korean food menus.
“Please give me one kimchi stew.”
The lady cooked stew in her kitchen and served it on her tray with side dishes.
“But it’s a face I’ve never seen before? Freshmen?”
“Yes, I came yesterday.”
Since it is a business in front of a school in a small town like this, most of the customers seem to know the face. The lady looked at Jun-woo’s face and said, “Yes.”
“You look good.”
“Aww. Thank you.”
Junwoo accepted the compliment with an awkward smile and lifted the spoon. Even though I was starving, the taste of the stew was below average.
The lady sitting at her feet continued to talk to Jun-woo, as if she was glad to have someone to talk to when she was bored.
“Where are you from?”
“Seoul.”
“What about the department?”
“Economics department.”
“Our son Jaebeom also entered the economics department this time.”
“Ah, I see. “He’s in the same class as me.”
“I know. Nice to meet you~”
“Haha. Yes.”
He accepted the words appropriately and cleaned his bowl.
After finishing his meal, Junwoo took out the yogurt he had brought from his bag. Sunshine Dairy Super Yogurt, 1 billion raw lactic acid bacteria, apple flavor.
The restaurant lady, who saw the yogurt Jun-woo took out, stared at Jun-woo with a very shocked expression. To Junwoo, that expression was more shocking.
“Why Sunshine Dairy? “This is my first time seeing someone eating Sunshine Dairy products in this neighborhood.”
“Yes? “Why?”
“I did not know? Hyobal University is the Golden Dairy Foundation.”
“Golden Dairy?”
Golden Dairy is Korea’s largest dairy company that has been ranked first in the industry for decades. According to the restaurant lady, the president of Golden Dairy Industries built this school to send her granddaughter to college. Thanks to this, a small commercial district was formed in Kangchon, which had nothing, and the local people regard Golden Dairy as if it were their savior.
“That granddaughter is very famous here.”
“What are you famous for?”
“You will know when you go to school and see for yourself. Even if you don’t say who it is, the moment you see it, you’ll recognize it as that student.”
Junwoo couldn’t quite imagine what that meant. Just now that he was eating Sunshine Dairy products, he felt strange, as if he had committed some kind of serious crime.
At that time, the restaurant door swung open behind me. When I turned around, a young man with his hair dyed bright red came in humming his tune. His ears were studded with piercings, and large chains hung from his neck and wrists.
“Is Jaebum here?”
“Uh. “Give me food.”
Jaebeom? This is the son the lady mentioned earlier.
Junwoo took a close look at his appearance. Long nose and chin with a skinny body. The narrow, torn eyes looked fierce. However, it wasn’t an ugly face. It could be said to be a typical Nallari style, but her eyes were clear.
“Sit there and eat with the student. That student also entered school this time. Department of Economics.”
“Ok? Really?”
Jaebeom looked down at Junwoo with a grumpy expression. His gaze passed Junwoo’s face, the clothes he was wearing, the empty rice bowl, and then headed to the yogurt in his hand.
Everyone, look here! This is Sunshine Dairy! What? Isn’t this heresy?! How dare you choose Sunshine Dairy over the great Golden Dairy? Guys, let’s go! Wooooo~ Kill it! Kill it! Kill it!
That won’t happen, but after hearing his lady’s words, Junwoo unconsciously moved his finger to cover the logo on the yogurt container.
Contrary to his unnecessary worries, Jaebum didn’t really care about yogurt.
“Nice to meet. “I am Jaebeom Wang.”
“Uh… Nice to meet you. “I’m Jang Jun-woo.”
“If I speak informally, do you also speak informally? I’m your brother, dude. “I took the exam again.”
“Me too.”
“You’re lying~!”
“It’s real.”
“Okay? Then I knew.”
What is this guy? Even though we met for the first time and said hello and just said our names, an unknown, abnormal energy was creeping in.
When the lady brought rice and stew, Jaebeom hummed his tune and ate the rice like a person who had starved for three days. I was really worried about one leg shaking.
Junwoo wanted to stand up first, but he didn’t think it would be a good idea to just say hello and then leave right away, so he sat there awkwardly. Jaebeom, who finished half of his rice in two spoons, glanced at Junwoo and opened his mouth.
“Did you come to this school because of Romi?”
“Who is that?”
“Huh~ What is this hybrid? Where are you from?”
“I came from Seoul.”
“You’re lying~!”
Wow – whenever I say something, they say it’s a lie.
“It’s true…”
“Okay, I got it. “You’re so handsome.”
What? Why Seoul? When did I ever ignore fat? I’m sorry about your qualifications.
At Jaebeom’s absurd reaction, Junwoo snorted with a calm expression.
Jaebeom said, scooping up a quarter of the bowl of rice and stuffing it into his mouth.
“Then you just came because you couldn’t study.”
“Actually, I have a full scholarship for 4 years. Originally, I could have gone to a mid-tier university in Seoul-“
“Boo! You’re hitting it! I’m sorry.
Why are you really like this? What’s wrong with you? I can’t say anything. Have you been deceived all your life? The grains of rice are so dirty, I can’t even talk to you.
I wanted to, but Junwoo had one thing he wanted to ask. I heard about a student called Golden Dairy’s granddaughter from her aunt a little while ago.
“But is that senior Romi the granddaughter of Golden Dairy?”
“If you knew, why did you pretend not to know? Ha,~ this bastard is so sloppy.”
“No. I heard it from your mother. Golden Dairy Company built this school and their granddaughter attends it. So, I asked if the senior you were talking about was him.”
Jaebeom turned his head towards the kitchen.
“Mom~!”
“Why~?!”
“Did mom tell her about Romi?”
“Uh, I did something. Why~?”
“Then I got it.”
What is this guy really?
Anyway, at Jaebeom’s request, Junwoo exchanged contact information with Nalari. Although he didn’t like the fact that the first friend he made after entering college was a guy like this, Jaebeom seemed quite happy talking to Junwoo.
“I will become a singer.”
Uh. Yes.
“Not the kind where a guy puts on makeup and puts on a gay show while saying something about a group dance. A true singer who touches people’s hearts.”
Anmuan Palace.
“People talk about how popular K-pop is worldwide, but in reality, all popular music these days sucks. The 90s were the best. At that time, really diverse and high-quality music was coming out consistently. Is it the same thing that big agencies produce every day? They talk about how addictive and popular it is, but in reality, it’s all just a sales pitch. Oh, of course I have to do business too. But this is going too far.”
“Then what kind of music do you want to make?”
“Music is rock after all. Band-based music is the foundation and perfection. This is my theory.”
Junwoo didn’t know much about music. Jaebeom didn’t seem to know that well, but I thought he probably knew more than me, so he nodded in agreement.
“Do you want to join us?”
“What? Music?”
“Uh.”
“No. “I can’t do that.”
Junwoo shook his head, but Jaebum continued to say what he was saying.
“I’m in a band in the same club as senior Romi. I played music and developed a crush. It’s good, right?”
“Are you developing a crush? Wow, what on earth is that senior? No, wait, but you haven’t even enrolled yet, what club?”
“I asked my local brother, who is a member there, to come in advance and do some activities. Since you are going to enter school now, I will give you a special parachute ride. Of course, it doesn’t guarantee passing. I mean, I can take you with me separately. Romi senior makes the decision.”
“I don’t need that parachute.”
“Don’t take it out, just come and take a look. No one can join our club. “The kids are lining up outside the front door trying to come in.”
“Is it such a great club?”
“Senior Romi is amazing.”
Junwoo also began to become curious. The restaurant lady, this guy named Jaebeom, and what kind of person is Romi senior that everyone is making such a fuss about?
“It’s soon ensemble practice time. “I have to go, so please follow me.”
“Then I’ll just go and take a look.”
“Okay, come on. “Stop fiddling with that yogurt container.”
“Uh.”
When she tried to pay for her meal, her aunt said she had treated her son’s new friend to a meal, and she did not take the card. Junwoo said he had a good meal and followed Jaebeom as he left the restaurant.
Because the school is located at the foot of a mountain, the campus was full of steep slopes. I walked across the empty campus to the student center building in front of the back gate.
The band clubroom was on the 4th floor of the student center. From the moment I climbed the stairs to the second floor, I could already hear the loud sound of drums.
Mad Monkeys. It was the name of the club posted at the entrance.
“Hello, seniors!”
Jaebeom’s energetic greeting was drowned out by the loud playing sound.
The seniors seemed to be absorbed in music and were concentrating on playing without even looking back.
Jigjijikjikkwakwakwakwakwakwakwakwakwakwakwakwakwakwakwakwakwakwakwakwakwakwakwakwakwakwa-!
This is more death metal than rock, right? Extremist music that he had never heard before hit Junwoo’s ears. It seemed as if his head was ringing.
And, Junwoo, who was standing behind Jaebeom, could immediately understand the meaning of what the restaurant lady said.
A young woman playing the guitar, waving her long, straight hair. She is a little under 170 cm tall and has slender body curves that can be described as perfect.
Although the leather jacket and ripped jeans looked like rocker clothes, it was immediately clear that they were high-end luxury items with the touch of craftsmanship.
Clear, big eyes, white skin, and sophisticated makeup. Innocentness, sexiness, and even cuteness coexisted in unrealistic facial features that were flawless. It was as if she had actually met a top star that she had only seen on TV.
In addition, a powerful aura that was difficult to express in words overwhelmed Junwoo. As her aunt said, Junwoo could tell, ‘Ah, that person is senior Romi.’
