Chapter 117 – Fever (4)
In a small, stuffy room with a soft lamp as the only light source, Jennifer’s eyes were fixed on Gordon reading Isabella’s letter.
“…”
Gordon, who had been reading her letter in silence for a while, soon raised his head and looked at Jennifer. His eyes were definitely reminiscent of Isabella’s. A gaze that makes you unable to move, as if you were looking at a dissected corpse. Jennifer got used to his persistent gaze.
“Sit down.”
Gordon looked at Jennifer a little more, then gestured to the chair in front of him and said one thing.
Jennifer sat down on the chair as he recommended, and Gordon clasped his hands together, placed them on the desk, and opened his mouth in a low voice.
“Is it because he was Isabella’s exclusive servant? The name is…”
“Jennifer, this is Jennifer Robinson.”
“Okay. “Miss Robinson.”
As his eyes darted back and forth from Jennifer to the letter and back again from the letter to Jennifer, he took a deep breath. Contrary to the stern expression he had maintained so far, he sighed, unable to hide his complex feelings.
“Do you know that, Miss Robinson? Isabella says that she has never, ever, hired her own personal servant.”
“I know.”
“Then, can I understand that you and Isabella are currently close?”
Jennifer thought for a moment. Isabella did not share her situation with her or worry about it with her. She didn’t question him either. The two had that kind of relationship. There can be no friction because both parties are only interested in each other.
That’s why she nodded her head. Paradoxically, she was now in a closer relationship with Isabella than anyone else.
Seeing her nod, Gordon quietly lifted the letter on the desk. Although it was hard to see in the dark room, I was able to recognize the elegant handwriting on the paper as belonging to Isabella.
“Do you know what this letter contains?”
“I don’t know.”
Jennifer answered obediently. Then Gordon asked again.
“Then, as a worker who is close to Isabella, do you have any guess as to what is written in this letter?”
Jennifer nodded her head at his words.
As she plunged into the quagmire that Isabella had laid out for her, she could already feel the sudden tension within her.
Isabella had lost the composure she had before, and she felt something strange about Germaine’s behavior and the subtle actions she sometimes showed when checking on Mason.
Considering that Isabella, who had recently been showing signs of paranoia, had contacted her father, whom she never spoke to, the contents of that letter were easily expected. 〈 Br〉
“… “I have a guess.”
As if she didn’t like her lukewarm answer, Gordon looked at her carefully and then slowly nodded.
“Yeah, I guess…” .”
After muttering that, Gordon got up from her seat and walked around her small office, then she returned to her seat and slammed her hands on the desk.
A loud sound echoed throughout the room, and small objects on the miscellaneous desk scattered or fell over, but were soon buried in the repetitive factory noise coming from beyond the room.
“But how can you be so calm now!”
Gordon’s expression was deeply distorted as he shouted like that. Her anger and absurdity were written on her face, and she poured out her words, pointing at her as if she could not understand her.
“It’s crazy. You must be crazy! As I read this letter, I couldn’t believe my own eyes! “Is everything written here true?”
Soon Gordon was holding his head with both hands, scratching his head nervously, and then he sank down into his chair as if he was sinking into the water. The deep sigh he let out was heard as a muffled mumble due to the hands covering his face.
“Oh my God, Isabella, what on earth have you done…” .”
Jennifer silently watched Gordon’s despairing movements. Unfortunately, his suffering brought her no inspiration. Even though her opponent was Isabella’s father, her real employer, she did not even feel fear, let alone respect.
The reason she pledged to sacrifice her life was because she was Isabella, not Gordon.
“Miss Robinson. She said Isabella had a general idea of how her mansion was run, right? Then she says let’s hear it from your mouth once she goes somewhere. From what you know, how many things has Isabella done?”
In front of the brown eyes shaking as if struggling, Jennifer quietly looked back on her memories. Sianna’s jade-colored eyes, which she had seen countless times, trembling as if she was about to shed tears, flashed through her mind.
“Threat.”
After using the emaciated and broken Sianna as bait to keep Mason out of her mansion, she had him watch his every move.
“Confinement.”
And of course, forcibly taking Sianna and Mason, and even taking them.
“River… “
“Stop!”
Gordon waved her hand and cut her off as if he didn’t want to hear anymore. There was deep hatred on his face, as if he was sick of it.
“But how can you be so calm? “Do you really know what the person you call your employer has done?!”
Jennifer wisely said no more. She just watched as her father, whom she considered a failure, was buried in her pain.
Gordon brooded for a while, then sat down and started talking.
“This is a big problem. It’s not just a matter of me covering it with money and sleeping on it. Threatened and imprisoned… “There is no way to quietly get away with these serious crimes.”
Then, suddenly, he looked at her with a self-deprecating laugh as if she was feeling helpless.
“Well, what would be the point if I caught you and told you something? “If these stories were poured out to you, who were born and raised in an ordinary small town all your life, how many would you be able to understand?”
“…”
Because it was true, Jennifer did not feel any anger. Neither Isabella’s plans nor Gordon’s pain and worries were irrelevant to her. It would be nice if her goal was simply met: to be used as Isabella’s faithful chess piece.
“It’s okay.”
That’s why she spoke to Gordon in a calm voice. Gordon’s eyes burned with anger for a moment, but she didn’t care.
“Because the lady will solve it.”
Her unusual composure was clearly getting on Gordon’s nerves. He looked at her incomprehensibly.
“Now that I think about it, you seem particularly calm. Even though she knows that Isabella caused all these incidents, she still treats her as her master.”
Jennifer nodded her head, and Gordon asked quietly.
“Can I ask why?”
Jennifer was glad that she could easily give him an answer.
“Because the young lady wants it.”
Achieving what she wants, and contributing to it.
She is the foundation for achieving her goals.
Feeling with one’s own skin that it is completely hers.
As Jennifer said that, she naturally felt a smile appear on her lips.
“It doesn’t matter if others don’t understand.”
Just as the young lady is not understood by you, Mason, or Siana.
I won’t be understood by you either, and even the young lady won’t understand me.
It didn’t matter.
Then, a strange look appeared in Gordon’s eyes, and she muttered as if she couldn’t understand.
“It is exactly as Isabella wrote in her letter.”
He laughed and muttered as if he was dumbfounded.
“It’s reckless. Even if I go crazy, I’m really crazy. “Both the monster I thought was my daughter, and you, who mindlessly participates in crime.”
He picked up a blank piece of paper on the table, wrote something down, and handed the paper to the employees who stayed until their conversation ended.
“Please prepare the items listed here and find a place for this young lady to stay for a few days. After finding a place to sleep for the coachman, I send him back to the mansion as soon as the sun rises tomorrow.”
When her servant took her paper, she bowed her head politely and left her room. As soon as her door was closed, Gordon looked at her and opened his mouth.
“You said you still don’t know exactly what was written in the letter, right?”
When Jennifer nodded her head, Gordon smiled slightly. It was a complex light source. A recklessness that can only be thought of when a person is cornered, and an attempt that can only be made with a final struggle.
“There is a plan proposed by Isabella. “I’m so reckless that I don’t know if I understood things correctly while reading, but I also don’t want to destroy everything I’ve built so far.”
Jennifer couldn’t understand what he was saying. But soon she realized again that there was no need to understand.
All she had to do was move as Isabella planned and as she wanted.
“I understand.”
In response to her response, Gordon nodded and stood up, taking out a coat from one of the closets and starting to put it on.
“Get up. There is a lot of work to be done.”
