Chapter 1 – The Life of an Unemployed
A noise is heard from far away. The noise is familiar in this building with these narrow rooms close to each other, but
What I hear now is not an intolerable everyday noise, but something to let someone know that I have come.
It was such an obnoxious kind of noise.
– Thump thump
I don’t know what kind of polite person knocks on the door from the wee hours of the morning, but I thought it was a really polite person.
Thanks to that, I woke up for a while, but I decided to go back to sleep with a very simple thought that it wouldn’t be my room.
That’s because there was no one to come to me now.
– Thump thump
Hearing the second knock with a strong will to wake him up, he finally decided to check who it was, and a word about time.
I decided to do it, and at this time of day, at this time, I would never think of getting up.
The watch…Was not where it was originally, so after being annoyed, I turned my eyes around to find the watch.
The clock on the table, which was not on the wall where it was originally, was turned over and was not immediately visible.
I would have done that, but I blamed yesterday’s me for leaving the watch like this, and when I looked at the watch with drowsy eyes, the hour hand of the watch was pointing between 12 and 1.
“Ah”
Just one word came out of my mouth like an idiot.
In general terms, it was the time when the sun rose in the middle of the sky, not the puppet dawn.
The brain that judged that there was nothing wrong on the other side began to search for who it was.
It was the first time I thought of being a landlord, but since I hadn’t paid the rent for less than a week, I deleted the option.
After thinking about it for a while, I heard another knock on the door.
I rolled my head, but there was no one to come, so I decided to just go out and pull myself out of bed.
“I’m leaving now”
When I opened the door with my not yet awakened head and unresolved body, there was only one letter left.
Don’t you usually put this in the mailbox? I thought and picked up the letter.
Seeing that the letter paper was high-quality and stamped with wax, it seemed that it was a letter from a high place.
I thought that it would not be a school because the school, which was a possible option, uses beeswax exclusively for schools.
I opened the letter.
—
To the professor’s lab by 3:00
—
It was a simple letter of only 8 letters.
There was no one who would be a professor except for the university I attended, so the sender would be convinced.
I just wondered how he knew I was here.
Leaving behind a riddle that would not be easily solved, it was bad if it was bad because I pretended to be with the professor no matter what.
Nothing good happened, so I decided to prepare for the outing.
After crumpling up the letter and tossing it on the desk, before you argue about likes and dislikes, in order to meet a person
It was right to go neatly, so I crammed my body into the narrow bathroom.
As I was preparing to go out, empty bottles were caught in my feet, but it was an ambiguous time to clean them up, so I decided to go and clean them up.
Went out of the house
District 4, where I live, is a kind of bed town.
It was a place where mostly students with light pockets stayed.
On the other hand, district 2, where educational facilities are gathered, was on the opposite side, so I had to move quickly to meet the time.
A cold wind blew from far away.
“It’s cold”
After leaving a quick comment about the weather, I turned around and started heading towards the school.
The calendar has already passed 10 pages, but I walked with a bitter smile at the fact that I lived without knowing that.
After about 10 minutes of playing with my feet like that, I started to see buildings that anyone would call ‘school’.
###
Commonly called Imperial University, this school actually has its original name.
Jerep Troizen Magic University.
This university, which boasts a history of 124 years, was founded by the emperor of the last century, Troizen II, after realizing the usefulness of magic.
In a way, it is not an exaggeration to say that the history of magic can be divided into before and after the establishment of the university.
It was similar to a kind of secret society where people with wills gathered and studied on their own.
Then, the emperor, realizing the utility, brought these studies together and made them study in earnest, which was the beginning of the Magic University.
In other words, it is the same as raising something that was in the dark to the bright.
Since then, most researchers have entered the university fence and started research, but they have the idea that magic should be free for everyone.
Some researchers rejected the proposal and created an independent organization, which is the Magic Tower.
Whether the emperor gave such an order only because he felt it was useful or to fully control the possibilities of magic is unknown.
It hasn’t been revealed yet, but it will depend on each individual’s thoughts.
However, there are few big people who go around proudly revealing the latter.
Of course, this isn’t the only place where magic is researched.
There are universities that study magic in other regions, and basic theories about magic and how to use it are learned at a place called the academy.
So-called popular departments such as magic spells exist elsewhere.
However, the difference between Imperial University and other universities is that they generously apply for specific majors.
And at the Imperial University, you learn this in your first year liberal arts class.
###
I don’t know if it’s because it’s been a long time since I’ve been here, but I thought about what I had learned in the past for a while, remembered that there was an appointment, and decided to move again.
It seems like I’m thinking too much these days, but sooner or later, I decided that it wouldn’t be like this once my thoughts were organized, and I decided to think of my destination again.
‘Leontief Building Room 341’
When I reached the entrance, I thought of my destination once again and started moving towards it.
It’s been a year and a half, but nothing has changed much.
As I went up the stairs while thinking of the number 341 over and over again, I saw a neat wooden object.
‘Spell Interpretation / Professor Rosalind Erennis’
I took a deep breath and knocked on the door twice.
“Come in.”
I heard a young voice that was familiar to me, but hard to think of as a professor if someone I didn’t know heard it.
“Excuse me.”
Among the numerous piles of papers, I saw the figure of a young professor.
“It’s been a year and a half.”
“Yes. Are you all right?”
“What’s wrong with the professor? Every day is the same.”
As a student, after hearing an answer that was not well understood, I asked a question to resolve the question I had heard earlier.
“Um…Professor?”
“Why?”
“This may be a bit rude, but how did you know where I am?”
Hearing this, the professor smiled bitterly and said:
“Everything has a way. And does it make sense that the professor doesn’t know where the students are?”
The words “That’s the majority of the neighborhoods next door” Didn’t come out of my mouth.
“What have you been doing?”
I couldn’t answer that I was idle every day without doing anything, so I just explained that I had read my major’s books and polished my graduation thesis.
“If it’s a thesis, is it the one that was submitted last time and rejected?”
“Yes”
The professor rummaged through the drawers and took out a magic candle and started burning it.
“Huh…You know how graduation thesis is passed, right?”
“Yes”
Graduation thesis at Imperial University usually had to be passed by three professors in one department to be recognized for graduation.
“I know you have talent in this field, so I brought you here, but other professors honestly don’t understand.”
“Of course, I will try persuasion, but know that it will be difficult.”
“…Yes”
After organizing my thoughts for a while, I remembered that the purpose of my visit today was not a graduation thesis.
“That…Professor, is the reason you called today just for your graduation thesis?”
The professor brought her out with the expression that she had remembered something she must never forget.
“Nothing else…”
“Are you confident in teaching others?”
I must have taught others before, but I only taught academy cadets for a while in the past, so there was no pressure.
It was hard to call myself a good teacher even with empty words.
“I’ve taught academy cadets before… But it was just a kind of tutoring.”
The thought that this could be the groundwork for recruiting teaching assistants sparked my spirits.
“And with all due respect, I have no intention of becoming a teaching assistant.”
A few years ago, when I was in school, I heard an urban legend that seniors a few grades earlier became teaching assistants and entered lectures instead of professors.
I had sworn never to become a teaching assistant.
Upon hearing that, Professor Rosalind rubbed his magic candle into the ashtray and shook his head.
“I didn’t call you to teach you.”
“Then what the hell is going on…?”
What else do you have to say to a senior who has only one semester left besides recommending graduate school?
While waiting for the professor to open his mouth with such a question, the words that followed were enough to break my expectations into pieces.
“Would you like to do some tutoring?”
